DEFRA Visits The Village Shop and Tea Room

Robin Bray and Jane Rebeiro welcomed some important visitors to The Village Shop & Tea Room in Compton recently. Bronwyn Hill, Permanent Secretary, DEFRA and Sarah Hendry, Director, DEFRA enjoyed a working lunch together with Paul Hamblin, Director ENPAA, David Butterworth, CEO Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority and Trevor Beattie, CEO South Downs National Park Authority.

They were on a fact finding tour of the South Downs National Park accompanied by Nigel James and Ian McConnell, Area Manager and Area Ranger, SDNPA. Subjects for discussion included accessibility and sustainable tourism as well as the social and economic well-being of rural communities within the Park.

Jane and Robin opened The Village Shop & Tea Room in 2009 and won the Countryside Alliance Award for the best Village Shop in the South East region the same year, which was quite an achievement. It was nominated for the Award again this year.

Manager, Elaine Salway, used to commute out of the village to work but for the last three years has enjoyed being at the hub of village life. Elaine says she loves being an integral part of the community as well as welcoming tourists, quite a number have become regular visitors and really appreciate being remembered from year to year. Elaine told us that she relishes the day to day challenge of meeting the needs of both local regular customers and visitors.

As well as enjoying their lunch, the visitors praised the Shop with its wide range of stock and commended the owners on what they had achieved for the community and tourism within the Park.
